Help Raw Girl Get a Makeover!

It’s about that time…Raw Girl needs a makeover, and I need your help to make it happen. Some of you may remember how excited I was about the new website?! Well, I ran into some serious technical difficulties, and was left without a functioning site after coughing up a nice chunk of money. My vision for Raw Girl is to keep expanding and in order to that I need to move this lovely blog off of the wordpress.com platform. I would like to add more video, downloadable products, skincare, podcasting and more.

For the past three going on four years this blog has been a complete labor of love. If you have been informed, inspired, enriched, or led to any sort of AHA moment, please support this campaign! All of the perks I am offering are all new products, including a mini juice & smoothie book with new recipes, mp3’s, and a 14 Day Parasite Cleanse. Because it is a fixed campaign, if I don’t reach my goal, you get 100% of your money back. Check out the video below,  and to visit the campaign and DONATE,  CLICK HERE: Raw Girl’s Indiegogo Campaign. Every single dollar counts, THANK YOU for giving what you can. ~ XoXo Raw Girl

FINAL RAW GIRL DRAFT

Raw Girl’s 21 Day Challenge is On!

inspired-actionCue the bells, whistles, and trumpets…spring is finally here! For those of you who follow the Facebook page, you know I mentioned wanting to host a virtual wellness challenge. I only moved forward because a nice amount of you were interested, so I hope some of you will come on board for the journey with me.

It is time for a spring cleaning. In this new season, I myself have been focusing relentlessly on wellness mind, body, and spirit. When you embrace making daily progress in each of those areas daily, amazing things begin to happen. The goal of the challenge is to give you an opportunity to see major changes in your mindset, body, vitality, or just simply inner peace by combining living foods, regular exercise, and mindfulness practice. Focusing on all of these areas really gives you an opportunity to “transform;” and by that I mean not just losing weight or boosting your energy temporarily, but seeing lasting changes and adjustments to unhealthy habits and reprogramming new healthier ones to replace them. There is no way you can lose if you are committed to seeing your end result!  I will be your guide through the 21 Days, and the package includes one-on-one coaching sessions with me, a detox plan, and additional raw recipes to help jumpstart your raw journey. All of this for about the same price of a one hour consultation.

541533_10150657683809821_1319308522_nVery excited to have the challenge sponsored by GAIAM, who will be giving the winner a 3 month subscription to GAIAM TV and a yoga mat up to 60$ in value. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to jumpstart your wellness. The challenge begins on April 25th. I recommend participants register no later than April 21st to have time to get prepared. The first five participants to register will receive an additional hour of one-on-one coaching. This challenge is something new and a way for me to get to know more of you lovely readers personally. I am ready to be of great service to all involved. If you have any feedback on the program, questions, concerns, or suggestions, please email me at rawgirltoxicworld@gmail.com-XoXo Raw Girl

To Green Smoothie or Not, That is the Question?

To Green Smoothie or Not, That is the Question?Green smoothies are a great way to get in a good serving or fruit and green leafy vegetables, especially in the morning. Typically they consist of something like l/3 of leafy greens, 1/3 fruit, and 1/3 or less of water. Or some people do more fruit than greens. You can always add more or less fruit or greens to your liking. There is some debate about whether or not green smoothies are healthy, just like with ever other health trend out there. Some say it’s not good for you because the amount of sugar (from the fruit) can make your blood sugar spike. To that I say ba-humbug. After healing myself of candida in a record five days on a high fruit diet (which most sources say NOT to eat), and hearing other people with blood sugar level issues and hypoglycemia also healing themselves by eating fruits, I am pretty sure at this point that the world is either upside down, or that most of the doctors in America are misinformed and need a serious re-education Lauryn Hill style.

Fruit does not metabolize in the body like refined sugars, and when combined with greens as well like in the green smoothie, it should further relieve any fears about your blood sugar spiking out of control. Then there are folks who may say that green smoothies are not enough to live on you must have other sources of nutrition. Well, duh! Of course, our body needs a well-rounded platter of nutrition, but the truth of the matter is that most Americans barely get in the amount of fresh greens and fruits that are in one green smoothie. Sometimes when I randomly pop through a conventional grocery store, I am shell-shocked by the amount of microwaveable, packaged, pre-cooked, pasteurized, high fructose corn syrup and canola oil laden food is in people’s shopping carts. On a good day, it’ll be lucky for me to spot one small bag of fruit in the sea of processed meals piled high in their carts. Green smoothies and even green juices are just simple ways you can get some fresh natural food into your body in the midst of your busy, I have no time for preparing food lifestyle. Blending is also simpler than juicing, for those of us who dread “the post-juice cleanup” or get a strong feeling of laziness just by looking at your juicer which may be growing dust on your kitchen counter.

If you feel sort of gassy or have indigestion immediately after having a green smoothie, by all means, please do not indulge in them or modify them with simpler fruit and veggie combinations until they do not bother you. I find that blending kale into things is just plain bad for me, personally. I prefer using lighter greens like spinach and romaine. You may be too sensitive to fruit and veg combinations and need to save your precious greens for that sexy salad you are whipping up later. If that’s the case do not feel bad about it. If you still love to have something green in your cup blend up a bunch of fruit, add a little water, and a teaspoon or two of Spirulina, or green grass powders you like. Or also try whipping up mostly green veg based smoothies and use veggies like cucumber and celery that have a high water content.

Below’s a simple green smoothie recipe that can be modified sans greens. At the end of the day the point of a healthy lifestyle is to be in tune with what your body needs along with your personal quirky cravings. So by all means necessary spend less time arguing or debating your specific dietary choices with people and just march to the beat of your own drum, or if your me you can shake a tail feather and do the electric slide, whatever works. I find that by following my bliss and my intuition, I honor myself and can never go wrong. Here’s to whatever kind of smoothie you choose to drink today, green or not, and even more importantly, here’s to all of us choosing each and every day to EAT TO LIVE. -XoXo Raw Girl

Simple Green SmoothieSIMPLE GREEN SMOOTHIE

2 Bananas

Equal parts frozen strawberry and mango

Large handful of spinach AND/OR 1-2 teaspoons Spirulina or green powder

Purified Water

Blend all ingredients. Serve & enjoy the bliss!

Juice! Green Morning Pick-Me-Up

Juice! Green Morning Pick-Me-Up!
Would you like to add a little va-va-voom to a basic green juice? If you are a regular and avid juicer you know how lovely it feels after having a fresh juice. I call it a juice high, and thankful it’s not an addiction that I need recovery from. Simply stated, if loving my greens is wrong, I don’t want to be right. If you need an extra energy boost, and plan to make a basic juice,  to up the ante  blend in or mix in some Spirulina for some additional protein and immune boosting properties.  If you don’t know anything about Spirulina, check out this past post. If you are new to raw foods or just juicing and living healthy in general please be gentle with yourself. Try starting each day with a juice or a smoothie. Everyday try to incorporate more and more living foods into your diet, and you will eventually stop craving unhealthy foods and instead yearn for how groovy you feel the more you eat from Mother Nature. I can testify that it works; that’s how I got my vegan swag back. -XoXo Raw Girl

GREEN MORNING PICK -ME-UP

1 head of celery

5-7 Leaves of Lacinato Kale

Ginger (to taste)

1 apple

1 teaspoon of Spirulina

Juice all ingredients. Pour juice in blender and add in Spirulina or mix in thoroughly. Serve, drink, enjoy the bliss!

Raw Girl’s 3 Year Blogiversary!

Last Friday I got a notification from WordPress congratulating me on three years of blogging. Raw Girl is officially three years old! To celebrate I am going to take a walk down memory lane this week and reblog some older posts that are my favorite. Please read through old posts and share with others in celebration of our Blogiversary!

My first reaction was excitement, but then I have to admit to you, negative Nancy started to creep in and say her piece. By the time Nancy (the negative voice in my head) was done telling me how far I was from my ultimate goal and how tired I was blah blah, I was seriously considering giving up altogether and walking away from this blog. Whenever I have those moments though, you guys, MY AWESOME READERS seem to know and I get a slew of encouraging comments and motivation to keep going. At the end of the day, this blog has always been a labor of love. My goal is to be able to live my lifestyle to the fullest and inspire as many people as possible to begin taking control of their health. In the dream that I am convinced will come true because I am very close, I will be able to do this full-time around my other artistic pursuits, and invest myself or find an investor willing to take Raw Girl to the next level. Which would include remodeling the website, lots of video, more inspiration, and more recipes. Until that time, I’m here. Although I get tired sometimes, I know that every journey to a dream takes time.

I’ve come a long way from zero readers to over 15,000 of you all over the world a month. Please know that I appreciate your support and your willingness to receive the inspiration that I intend to give. Some of you have sent me unsolicited donations, you know who you are and I thank you. If you want to give back share the blog with a friend, or buy my e-book. Finishing my second e-book soon, putting in work today on a really awesome juice recipe book and detox plan. This blog journey has taught me patience, and also the importance of doing the work, one day at a time. Just like sticking to a new lifestyle or changing your eating habits, it’s best to focus on doing what you need to do each day, and letting the rest take care of itself. -XoXo RawGirl

Recipe: Raw Key Lime Pie

Finally! Below is the long awaited recipe for raw key lime pie just in time for the holidays. I had fun making this. When I made my pies, (yes I made two—I’m dealing with an avocado crisis remember?) I actually made two desserts in one sitting because the crust is made from the same ingredients as coconut macaroons, which are equally as marvelous. I’ll post recipe for those later.

This recipe is on www.sweetlyraw.com as an Avocado Cheesecake. I finished making my version and it tasted like a key lime pie, hence the renaming. If you don’t have a food processor, you can do what I did and in place of the almonds for the crust use almond flour (already ground up almonds). I got my bag at Trader Joes. I’m not really a follow the rules of the recipe exactly girl, so I made two pies, one smaller and one larger and kind of free-styled for the larger pie. If you don’t have a spring form pan don’t worry you can just use a regular pie pan. I didn’t use any stevia as the recipe calls for and it still tasted pretty miraculous. Enjoy, and remember not to hog the pie! It’s that good. -XoXo Raw Girl

Crust

1/3 cup blanched almonds
1/4 cup shredded coconut
2 dates, pitted
1/2 – 1 teaspoon water
1 teaspoon melted coconut oil

Grind the almonds in a food processor.
Add the coconut, dates, and water and grind into a dough.
Add the coconut oil last. Grind again into a mixture that will hold together when pressed in your hand.
Press into the bottom of mini or 6″ spring form pan (crust will be thin in a 6″ – you can double the recipe if you want it thicker) and set aside.

Filling

2 medium/large avocados
6 tablespoons agave or honey
1/2 cup lime juice
1 teaspoon pure vanilla
6 drops stevia
5 tablespoons melted coconut oil
4 tablespoons melted coconut butter
lime zest, to taste

Blend the avocados, agave, lime, vanilla, and stevia until smooth and creamy.
Add the oil, butter, and some zest. Blend to incorporate. Add more zest if needed.
Pour over the crust.
Allow to firm in the fridge for at least 8 hours.

Raw Girl’s Birthday Wish

Me at age five or six 🙂

Exactly a week from today on October 15th, is my birthday. Yep, Libra is in the house! I’m getting all sappy and reflective and thinking about the meaning of my life and all that Oprah-like stuff. I woke up this morning totally NOT feeling like blogging, but I sat to write anyway. Then I came across the lovely news that YOU ALL have helped Raw Girl in a Toxic World make it to the finals in the BlackWeBlog Awards!!!!! Yes, the competition started with 10 blogs in that category and Raw Girl is in the top 5!! I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for this pre-birthday present. Voting has started and will continue until October 23rd, and  I would definitely love for my birthday to WIN Best Health/Wellness Blog. As your gift to me, please VOTE. If all of you lovelies voted, we’d be sure to win. The ballot is live now and you can VOTE HERE.

Each year that passes in my life I feel I learn something new. This year I celebrate a new year of life, but it’s bittersweet because exactly a day before my birthday last year, our family buried my dear brother. Health means so much to me, it is truly a priority of mine to do everything in my power to live the most optimal life so I can be fully present in the lives of those I love. Beyond guarding your health though, life happens. We never know when our time is coming and the one thing that is for sure is that all of us want to make an indelible mark on the work in some way big or small. We want to feel that our voice is heard, that somebody saw us, and even more so that somebody loved us. In the end it’s only the love that lasts, it’s the good intentions that linger, and the selfless thought that truly counts. We can do things, and amass accomplishments all day long, but without that love, it doesn’t have the power to touch someone’s life forever. As I’m sifting through my birthday AHA! moment I am hoping that the love and desire I have to help people live the healthiest lives possible has come through to YOU.

I’ve started thinking about what I really want for my birthday. If I could list material things and lovely pleasures I would want to experience in the next week it would include things like a night out at the opera to see Don Giovanni (Kennedy Center to be exact), a hot yoga class or two, unlimited coconut water, dinner and dessert! at Pure Food and Wine, and perhaps a mini-shopping spree. Since I cannot have my brother back in physical form, which would be at the top of my list,  and I am on a budget at the moment…I’m mining for a less material birthday wish. What I have come up with thus far, is that this year, I wish to find the deepest expression of love for myself. That may sound strange but everything is to be said about true self-esteem, and being able to root your happiness in a lasting way that is not swayed by others criticisms, what job you have, what relationship you are in, what designer shoes you wear, or how much money is in the bank. It’s the kind of self-love that only can happen from being filled up in your spirit. From that and with that, really I feel anything is possible. Thank you  all for continuing to read, thank you for your comments,  your support, your letters, and your encouragement. You all inspire me to keep going and I continue to learn a great deal by showing up every week to write. This blog as come a long way in the past three years, and that in itself, is a birthday wish come true. -XoXo Raw Girl
