Food Can Be Medicine
Food can be medicine.
Yet many patients are never given food prescriptions by their healthcare providers. Instead they are given medicines that mask symptoms, deplete nutrients, and fail to resolve the root cause.
I recently had an inspiring conversation about how holistic therapies and Western medicine could coexist and work together. In my humble opinion, medication should NOT be administered without an expiration date. Medication should be used to stabilize in extreme cases of imbalance or emergencies and then the goal should be for the patient to wean off those meds using diet and lifestyle interventions to promote health.
The longer I practice, the more I find supplementation, herbs, and natural therapies that have no side effects and are just as effective if not more than certain medications.
We are all uniquely made, have a distinct genetic makeup, and I believe if we equip ourselves with basic knowledge of how our bodies function, apply ancient health principles that have been tried and true for thousands of years, and listen deeply for signs and symptoms of imbalance, more often than not we would find an empowering and simple way of eating and living that would bring us joy and vibrant health.

International Women’s Day 2021
Happy #InternationalWomensDay
Let’s talk for a moment about why women’s health is so important.
Women, and especially black women, experience unique health challenges and are more likely to be diagnosed with certain diseases than men. Chronic diseases and conditions, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, are the leading causes of death for women. And 38% of women suffer from one or more chronic diseases, compared to 30% of men.
On top of that, it is not unusual for medical studies and drug trials to exclude women. Black women and people of a color are also rarely included – and we all know that the trauma of misuse of black bodies for exploitative studies runs deep.
One example is the American Heart Association’s 2007 guidelines for preventing cardiovascular disease in women. In 2010, Duke University researchers looked more closely at the research used to establish the guidelines and they found that less than 1/3 of all of the study participants in the trials were women. A few of the trials (about 13%) didn’t even include any women.
That means that much of the data used to develop guidelines for women were not specific to women. That’s a #healthgap
I am so grateful every day for the opportunity to help bridge this gap and help women achieve optimal health and wellness through holistic means.
That is why I’m also on a mission to help as many women as I can reclaim their hormonal health.
Sistren, I have a dream… that women can live pain-free and symptom-free from hormonal related illness. That we have all the tools to understand our bodies, Aunt Flow, and master our hormonal balance at every stage of life. And once we master it, we pass on this legacy to our daughters, and they will pass it on again. If you heal a woman, you can heal an entire family, and then an entire nation. Getting Rid of Acne, For Good
The skin is the largest organ in the body and everything we eat has a direct effect on its ability to regenerate. Your skin is one of the first places that you may witness a major transformation when you choose to adopt a plant-based lifestyle.
For several years, I struggled with acne that did not seem to go away with any sort of treatment, over the counter or otherwise.
Finally, I realized that I had to combat my acne from the inside out. I stopped eating vegan junk food, soy, refined sugar, fried anything, and gave up refined carbs. Within one month on a raw vegan diet my skin was not only clear, it was glowing.
A plant-based diet is a powerful tool for healing skin issues because many skin problems are related to poor diet, nutritional deficiencies, or constipation. Eating a wide range of whole foods packed with nutrients and full of fiber immediately solves these problems.
To get rid of acne for good, you have to figure out the root cause in order to heal. In my book The Acne Free Diet (available on Amazon), I discuss three root causes of acne:
1) Poor diet
2) Parasitic or Candida infection
3) Hormonal imbalance
If you are struggling with problem skin, start with figuring out your root cause. Each of these root causes requires different interventions, but a plant-based diet can be helpful for many people with any of the three I mentioned.
The most essential step to thriving on a plant-based diet is learning more about your body type. I fell into a plant-based diet intuitively, and although I have tweaked my diet over the twenty four years I’ve been vegan, I have also discovered through diagnostic tools that it is indeed the best diet for me. Nutrigenomics & Staying Ageless 30+
Food is information… that can turn on and turn off certain genes.
You may be aware that your genes somewhat determine the health hand you have to deal with in life — if your grandparents or parents had heart disease, diabetes, hypertension etc. this can leave you more susceptible to getting the same conditions.
