Grounding or “earthing”

I used to often say, “I love being in nature, I just don’t like nature getting on me.” Never been a roll in the dirt kinda gal, but I love living near a beach so I can walk in the sand regularly. There’s something about it that always lifts my spirits and makes me feel, well, grounded.

What if the shoes on our feet and our lack of connection to nature and specifically the ground was also creating inflammation and disease? Turns out there’s some evidence that this is the case, and although naysayers say there isn’t enough research, I decided the best way to determine if it had any benefits was to just try it myself.

Grounding or earthing is the practice of regularly planting your bare feet on the ground specifically on conductive sources which include – soil, grass, sand, or concrete. Why in the HECK would you consider this? To start…it’s completely and utterly FREE technique for lowering blood pressure, boosting heart health, reducing pain and inflammation. Let me break it down.

From a scientific perspective, the idea is that the earth has a mild negative charge to it. In modern life as we go about our day and are in constant contact with tech etc., our bodies build up a positive charge. During the normal processes of metabolism the body generates ‘reactive oxygen species’ also known as ‘free radicals’. Free radicals are helpful to the body in lower amounts as they can destroy unwanted things in the body like bacteria or viruses, but  too many free radicals are not ideal, and are associated with chronic disease and accelerated aging.

Free radicals are unstable and lack electrons, one way to stabilize them is to give them electrons which can be supplied by antioxidants like vitamin A, C, E, and polyphenols—essentially a diet high in plant-based foods. The reason why earthing is powerful is that in addition to diet, it is another way to get electrons in the body, neutralize free radicals, and reduce inflammation.

As I explore I will be sharing a few of the research findings that do exist and my own experience which hopefully will make you too want to take some time each day to put your feet in the dirt, grass, or sand. -XO

#LibraSeason

One month countdown to my birthday!! #LibraSeason  Here are some things I have been doing intentionally lately:

Grounding – walking barefoot on the earth meaning soil, sand, grass (reduces inflammation and more – will talk about this in detail soon)

Belly Laughing (lightens the spirit, also good for the abs)

Choosing the highest best thought (good for avoiding drama and creating connection)

Engaging my inner girl – last week she wanted beads in her hair so here we are thanks to my AMAZING stylist @loclovstyles @thehealingstylist (great for the soul)

Being impeccable with my words and clear about what I will and won’t accept (great for protecting my peace)

I get intensely introspective leading up to my birthday, and I also usually double down on self-care. That’s why I’m excited to relaunch #StayingAgeless just in time for ME to take my own class LOL. I’ll be doing my rituals in tandem with the women who join and including some of the new longevity insights I’ve learned over the past year. I have started already – last week I got the results from my DNA and nutrient testing, ordered my tracker (thanks for the tip @drgarthdavis), and I’m gearing up to refine my diet and level up my rituals. Who’s with me? If you’re down, apply to join the #AgelessTribe and let’s get this longevity party started. -XO

#WCW Ms. Cicely Tyson

Can we love on our legends more while they are with us? Today’s #WCW is 95 years young Ms. Cicely Tyson

Still sharing her talents, able bodied, and fabulous. I have no idea what her dietary habits are… but the one time I had the pleasure of meeting her was at a raw vegan restaurant.

I was dining with a friend at what used to be one of my favorite spots in New York City, and we looked across the room and there tucked in a corner with a companion feasting on a seven course raw vegan meal was the one and only Cicely Tyson. My friend and I went over and introduced ourselves and she cordially told us she has just come from shooting a Tyler Perry film. I left the chance meeting inspired.

Staying Ageless is not about anti-aging. It’s about getting to a ripe age and still THRIVING. Not needing assistance to do basic tasks, being able to still create and participate in activities you love, and ideally being without medications. Similar to my amazing supercentarian guest on last week’s podcast, Ms. Tyson is legendary for her gifts, and I would contend, her #Ageless spirit.

Staying Ageless 30+ is baaaaack and open for enrollment! If you are a woman 30+ who is interested in staying fly til your 99, or close to it, apply via the link in my IG profile or my website.

Optimize Your Body’s Function

Eyes on the prize with veggie juice in tow. #MYHBA

Are you focused on the absence of disease or creating optimal health? What we focus on determines what we carry in our bag.

Western medicine actually focuses on pathogenesis – the origins and development of disease and the use of medicine to prevent, treat, and “cure” these diseases.

As a practitioner coming from a holistic perspective, my focus is more on salutogenesis, or how to support and promote health and well-being and bring about a healthier body by optimizing its function. When we approach disease from a holistic perspective we can more readily get to the root cause and connect the dots of lifestyle, diet, and other factors that caused imbalance rather than simply treating symptoms with medicine that in most cases ultimately doesn’t resolve the problem.

With this small change of focus,we can drastically change our approach and find tools, lifestyle interventions, supplements, and foods that help us to THRIVE and actually cure the underlying cause of any health imbalance. Some things I do daily to optimize function: adequate rest, water, proper diet, exposure to sunshine, meditation and prayer. What are some things YOU do daily to promote health? Shout it out in the comments below. -XO
