If you haven’t checked out Episode 1 of Healthy Living in a Toxic World, you are missing out! It was such a pleasure to interview Ageless superstar Annette Larkins. I learned a lot from her. One of my favorite gems is highlighted in the clip above, after she explained that her family has a genetic history of serious chronic conditions but that her lifestyle has kept her youthful, happy, and healthy!
As we have just entered into a New Year, ask yourself if there’s anything in your own family history or even personality that you are using as an excuse to not achieve optimal health. Now, I want you to turn that on it’s head and list all the lifestyle changes you can make to ensure that those excuses don’t become your reality.

The Health Benefits of Green Matcha Tea
If you are concerned with remaining ageless, losing weight, or just boosting your intake of antioxidants, green matcha tea needs to be on your radar. I’m all about agelessness and skipping botox for life, so these days you will find me in my office alternating between sipping green matcha and getting my daily water intake in. Although green matcha tea comes from Camellia sinesis the same plant that green tea is derived from they do have some key differences. Green matcha is essentially stone ground tea leaves, and is grown by keeping the plant covered for 20-30 days which increases chlorophyll production, boosts amino acid content, and makes for a darker green hue.
To give you a clearer picture about how potent green tea matcha is, to get the effects and similar nutrient content of one cup, you’d have to consume 10 cups of green tea. Green matcha is extremely high in antioxidants, which are act as our bodies’ defense agents, lower our risk for chronic disease, and work to stabilize free radicals and slow the aging process. Green tea matcha actually contains more antioxidants than goji berries, pomegranate, blueberries, acai, broccoli, and spinach, all of which are antioxidant powerhouses. When it comes to weight loss green tea matcha has been shown in studies to increase the oxidation of fat, especially in women. Another small study that was conducted on men, showed that taking green tea extract during moderate exercise was able to increase fat burning by 17%.
Other researched benefits of green tea matcha include improved mood and mental performance due to some of the main constituents in the tea including: phytochemicals, small amounts of caffeine, L-theanine, and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). L-theanine promotes alertness and helps to keep energy levels stable after consuming caffeine, and has also been shown to boost alpha wave activity in the brain which can provide you with an awesome dose of relaxation and decrease your stress levels. Catechins are beneficial compounds found in green tea, and have been estimated to be 137 times greater in green tea matcha. ECGC is a type of catechin that has anti-cancer properties and is abundant in matcha.
After learning about all of the amazing ways matcha can enhance your health, you are most likely wanting to know how to best prepare it so you can reap the wonderful benefits. The good news is, preparing matcha is simple. You can buy matcha powder in bulk or in prepackaged smaller packets already portioned out, and mix 2-4 grams of matcha powder or 1-2 teaspoons into 8-10 oz of hot water. For thinner tea use more water. To spice things up you can also get creative and add milk or non-dairy milk and make green matcha lattes. -XO Raw Girl

My 5 Favorite Healthy Finds in London
Hey lovelies! I’m baaaaack! Last week was my birthday, and I went out of town to London for the British Film Institute Film Festival, and and some much needed exploration time. Traveling is my favorite thing to do, and it was amazing to visit London 10 years later and see how much more veggie friendly options are available. I ate well, found some awesome supplements, and got schooled on some #Ageless tips by my aunt who is 48 and looks like she is in her early thirties. Black don’t crack! And also putting in place healthy rituals long term can seriously go a very long way.
This week I’ll be posting a quick list of some of the amazing veg spots I’ve found that you can check out if you are ever in London Town. I’m starting the series with a few products recommended to me by my aunt – who focuses on staying sugar-free, eating to optimize her digestion, moved out of the city to a more quiet location, and engages in regular self-care. I’ll elaborate on all of these points soon, but believe me I was taking serious notes! We had lunch at Planet Organic which is my new world favorite one-stop shop health food store. Featuring a hot and cold food bar, juice and smoothie bar, groceries and healthy meals to go, and a vitamin section that made my jaw drop, I was sure that I would be in this store every day if I lived in London. Below are some of the amazing products I picked up at Planet Organic and around London during my stay.
Udo’s Choice – Digestive Enzymes and Probiotics – Another recommendation from my aunt, who credits some of her youthfulness to maximizing her digestion was this brand Udo’s Choice. She takes the probiotic and the enzymes. The enzymes are completely plant-based, and gluten and dairy-free. You can take 1 tablet before meals to enhance your digestion or sprinkle the contents of a capsule directly over cold food only; as hot food will damage the enzymes.
Argiletz Laboratorie Green Clay Soap – This soap has no artificial preservatives, no irradiation, not been tested on animals, has no synthetic perfumes, artificial colors or petrochemicals. Essentially, it is a dream come true that can nourish the skin and suck the impurities out and gently exfoliate. LOVE it already.
Beautifully Scrumptious Foot Pack – Self care lovers this one is for you! These foot packs are awesome, and some have essential oils added. In the package are two booties that you put your feet in and leave on for 20 minutes. Great for a long day on your feet or a pre-pedicure treatment to soften your skin.
Sun Chlorella (Tablets) – This was a recommendation from my aunt as a product that boosts natural glow 100%. It comes in small tablets that you can take up to 15 at a time daily, or in a satchet in powder form. I chose the tablets and will report back. It seems like an amazing way to get a good dose of chlorophyll in, especially in the winter when I am less likely to make smoothies and add spirulina or chlorella.
Keep it Raw…Ombar – This chocolate is to die for! Vegan, no preservatives, no refined sugar, and potent. They have chocolate with a center filling like pistachio, with nuts like the almond chocolate I tried, or just plain. All will give you a legit chocolate fix with absolutely none of the guilt.
5 Reasons to Think Twice Before Taking Collagen
To collagen, or not to collagen? That seems to be the latest question in the natural beauty and health world as natural food stores and conventional grocery stores alike now have shelves full of collagen supplements that promise better skin, accelerated wound healing, reduction of inflammation, and tighter pores, all from a daily dose of powdered animal bones. At the Wellness Market I recently attended, all of us panelists were asked our personal take on these supplements, and I had to give a long answer. Below is my progressive thought process on collagen supplements, and why you won’t see me lining up to add it  to my cart in the checkout line. Until the research is more definitive, I personally will be over here side-eyeing the collagen fanatics, eating my fruits and veg, reducing sugar intake, and taking my vitamin C and silica while waiting for this health fad to pass and the next new fix-it-all to emerge on the marketplace. If you are heaven bent on trying them, keep in mind that supplements are not heavily regulated by the FDA. I recommend you do your research to make sure the supplement you take has been tested by a third party to verify its claims. -XoXo Raw Girl Â
- The Science is Fishy. There is no science to justify that when collagen (mostly from animal bones/ sources) is ingested it translates directly to building the collagen in our own skin. In fact it seems a bit nonsensical as collagen is simply an amino acid or protein, which is not complete as it’s missing tryptophan. When we ingest collagen the body breaks it down like any other protein.
- Opt For Whole Food Sources. IF (and this is definitely hypothetical)  I were to buy into this idea of consuming collagen to get more collagen, it would make a lot more sense to source it from bone broth which contains around 6 grams of collagen per cup. I would opt for this because I believe a whole food source is always better than a supplement in a shiny bottle from a company that may or may not properly oversee the production and sourcing of it’s product. Bone broth can be made from the comfort of your home or purchased. I will add the precautionary statement as I do with most meat products to do proper research on your sources, because even broth made from organic ingredients can contain harmful chemicals and toxins. One study found that bone broth sourced from organic chickens had ten times the amount of lead than the water used to boil it with once finished. Not so YUM.
- Lack of Unbiased Research Studies. Most of the minimal research conducted on collagen supplements is not very in depth, does not show long term consequences, and is also paid for by companies that could stand to benefit from favorable results. I won’t be able to trust that I can try these supplements or recommend them without someone showing me valid unbiased research that also shows the long term implications of taking them over time. There are findings that are promising:
- In 2014, a study of 69 women ages 35 to 55 found that those who took 2.5 or 5 grams of collagen daily for 8 weeks showed that those who took collagen had improvement in skin elasticity, compared with the control group.
- A study conducted in 2015 found that protein supplementation in combination with resistance training may increase muscle mass and muscle strength in elderly subjects. The objective of this study was to assess the influence of post-exercise protein supplementation with collagen peptides v. placebo on muscle mass and muscle function following resistance training in elderly subjects with sarcopenia. A total of 53 elderly men with sarcopenia, a loss of muscle caused by aging, found that those who took 15 grams of collagen daily, in addition to lifting weights three times per week for 12 weeks in a guided resistance training program, gained significantly more muscle and lost more fat than those who only lifted weights.
- In 2006 a study of 89 long-term care residents compared Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) scores at 8 weeks in long-term-care residents with pressure ulcers who were given standard care plus a concentrated, fortified, collagen protein hydrolysate supplement vs. residents who were given standard care plus placebo. By week 8, PUSH tool scores showed approximately twice the rate of pressure ulcer healing in the treatment group that took the collagen supplement compared with the control group.
- The Magical Pill Effect. We all want to stay youthful, maintain healthy weight, and live disease-free but most of us do not want to do the work. The danger here is that products, such as these collage supplements can flood the market and in a wave everyone is rushing to use them and relieved that the one answer to solve all of their health woes has finally arrived. Except, there is no answer beyond the daily hard work of exercise, a healthy balanced diet, and long term stress management. I know, I know, it’s not what any of us want to hear but it’s important to check ourselves so we don’t get caught in health fads that can possibly do more harm than good to our long term health.
- Misguided Focus. Rather than trying to ingest collagen, a more productive focus is to supplement and boost intake of things that will increase collagen production and reduce foods that can lead to it’s speedier breakdown or accelerate aging overall. Vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen and you can easily take up to 16,000 mg of vitamin C without adverse effects. In addition to or instead of a regular old supplement, I would focus on increasing vitamin C rich foods and super foods like camu camu which has 30-50 times the vitamin C of oranges. Fruits and vegetables in general which are high in phytonutrients, antioxidants and also include vitamin C are winners when it comes to boosting collagen production. After boosting vitamin C intake, and intake of nutrient dense plant foods, I would focus on eliminating refined sugar and salt intake. The process of breakdown or destruction of collagen and elastin can be accelerated with excess consumption of sugar, and consumption of  high protein or high fat foods that also have high sugar content. The other supplement I personally would opt for over collagen, is a high quality plant based silica supplement which can help boost skin, hair, and nail health. Silica is another nutrient that is required for the formation of collagen and decreases naturally as we age.

Raw Vegan Superhero Highlight: Bernando LaPallo, 111 Years Young
When you are off the beaten path and living la vida raw, it is necessary to find motivation to help you go the distance. I personally have always felt reinvigorated and inspired to continue my journey when I hear the stories of living examples who are reaping the benefits of their lifestyle well into their golden years. If you followed the first season of my radio show Healthy Living in a Toxic World, you may remember my longevity series which focused on interviewing HEROES and SHE-ROES who are on the raw diet, and remaining youthful over seventy. I interviewed two of my anti-aging she-roes Mimi Kirk and Annette Larkins, as well as Bernando LaPallo who was 109 years old at the time of interview. This amazing man turned 111 years old last year. Check out the video below for a sneak peak of how a raw vegan lifestyle has worked for him and if you haven’t listened to my radio interview with him yet, which is full of many nuggets of wisdom, check it out now online: Longevity Series: Bernando LaPallo. -XoXo Raw Girl
Smoothie! Moringa Mango Madness & the Anti-Aging Anti-Parasitic Benefits of Moringa
So last week we introduced the miracle tree, Moringa Oleifera. As extensive as that article was, we barely skimmed the surface. If you haven’t read part 1 I suggest you check out the first blog post on Moringa here. In addition to the nutritional benefits of Moringa like the fact that it contains more than 92 nutrients and 46 types of antioxidants, moringa is extremely beneficial for slowing the aging process and guess what, killing parasites! If you are a regular reader of this blog, you should know how much I love any natural product that I can add to my parasite killing arsenal.
If you don’t know, antioxidants are key in slowing the aging process because they neutralize free radicals. The combination of superior nutritional value, which in includes providing all eight essential amino acids and 18 of the 20 amino acids absolutely essential for good health, seven times the Vitamin C content of oranges, four times the Vitamin A of carrots, four times the calcium of milk, Â and three times the potassium of bananas, high amounts of iron, along with 46 antioxidants makes moringa probably one of the strongest natural sources of antioxidants. In the O.R.A.C. rest (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) test, moringa was tested against and beat out superfoods like acai, dark chocolate, garlic, blueberries, goji berries, pomegranate, red wine, and baobab for the most antioxidant capacity.
In addition to the powerful antioxidants, moringa leaves contain healthy amounts of cytokinins, which are naturally occuring plant hormones that induce cell division, growth, and delay aging of cells. Clinical studies have shown that this compound also called Moringa YSP produces anti-aging properties in humans and caused new skin cells grew faster than the older cells died. This resulted in an almost miraculous reduction of wrinkles on the face and other parts of the body. Sound better than botox? I think so.Â
Now lets get to the parasite killing properties of this other worldly plant. Moringa not only kills parasites, it kills their eggs as well! This is really important to note because in most parasite cleanses, even ones you buy over the counter you have to take cloves in combination with black walnut hull and wormwood to effectively combat both the worms and their eggs. The cleansing effect cause by taking moringa has been used by traditional people to combat worms for years and years. It can effectively help to get rid of waste and parasites while also providing enough nourishment to rectify any imbalances caused by the worms as they leave your body. I am very excited about incorporating this tree into my diet long term for nutrition and to combat parasites and plan to grow it. Last week, I bought some moringa powder and I’m testing out this particular brand. I plan to find the best, most potent brand of leaf powder and continue ongoing use. Will most definitely report back my results! If you want to check out what I am using now, go the Raw Girl Store, and you’ll see it under super foods. Below is the recipe for my first moringa smoothie. -XoXo Raw Girl
Moringa Mango Madness Smoothie
Ingredients: 2 bananas, 1 cup to 1.5 cups of frozen mango, 1 tablespoon moringa powder, 1 tablespoon flaxseed, Young thai coconut water and meat or almond milk.
Put all ingredients in blender. Blend, serve, enjoy! 🙂

Anti-Aging SHE-ROE #11: Annette Larkins
The picture to the left is what introduced me to Annette Larkins years ago. If you’ve read my past posts you know that I am a coconut fiend! I would have one a day if I could. So when I saw this photo of a FAB woman sipping on coconut water, I needed to know who she was immediately. I had been meaning to get around to writing a post on her, but it slipped my mind until recently a friend messaged me the video of her below, and a reader posted a comment on the blog about her.
Who would not want to be in their seventies and have youthfulness and vitality that surpasses that of some in their thirties? The woman has had NO PLASTIC SURGERY, and often times gets mistaken for the daughter of her husband who is around her age! When I imagine my ideal self at seventy I look at someone Annette Larkin for inspiration to fuel the dream. Yes, I plan to be that size four wearing, head turning grandmother who still gets cat called in the streets. Annette began her journey as a vegetarian, while her husband owned a meat shop! She then transitioned into raw and has been 100% for over 20 years. As you will see in the video she eats primarily from her own garden, and drinks rain water. That I thought was super cool and interesting. She has authored a two-part booklet series called Journey to Health that can be found on her website via the link below.
The power of the RAW vegan lifestyle is real, and stories like this continue to reinvigorate my inspiration for leading this lifestyle. It can be tough when people constantly question your choices or simply taunt  you for being a vegetable lover. Know that if you choose this path, just like Annette, you will have the last laugh, although by then it may not be too funny. Annette’s husband who now regrets not joining her on her health quest years ago now lives with the help of medication. There’s nothing funny about watching loved ones and friends suffer from diseases or lack of mobility as they get older, but we each have one life to live. What you do with yours, is your choice. EAT TO LIVE. -XoXo Raw Girl

Anti-Aging SHE-RO #10: Mimi Kirk
How many  grandmothers do you know that can still turn heads in the streets? Yesterday, I came across a lovely article about 72-year-old  raw foodist, Mimi Kirk. She was named the Sexiest Vegetarian over 50 a couple of years ago. A grandmother of seven, she decided to become a vegetarian in her thirties and then in 2008 went raw and has stayed on the path. Mimi is the author of Live Raw, and remains incredibly vivacious through diet and positive energy. More power to Mimi, I’m coming for her title in a several decades!  Check out the videos and the article below. -XoXo Raw Girl
