Shopper’s Guide to Avoid Gentically Engineered Foods!

The other day I stumbled upon this incredibly handy (FREE!)  pocket guide, which is published by True Food Network. Since learning about genetically engineered food, I have been well—a little freaked out— to say the least, even though I eat organic. It was refreshing to look through this list and have a clearer idea of what exactly GMO’s and GE Food are, and what brands may use them. According to the guide, the only genetically modified fruit currently on the market is papaya from Hawaii. So if you are predominantly a fruit and veggie eater, and you don’t indulge in processed foods, you should be safe. Non-organic produce eaters primarily have to worry about the pesticides, but at least for now thankfully, no need to worry about genetically engineered veggies. If you do eat processed and/or package foods, this is a handy guide to carry around while shopping to avoid consuming food that may have been prepared with or contain genetically engineered food. Anything labeled organic, or 100% organic cannot, by law, contain any genetically engineered foods. Meat-eaters who are not eating grass fed, free range meat,  have much cause to be worried because those animals are usually raised on feed produced from genetically engineered crops.

Go Alkaline! Shed Pounds, Change Your Mood, & Renew Your Health

The issue of alkaline vs. acidic diet is a very important one for veggie lovers and meat-eaters alike. Below is a video clip of CNN coverage featuring Dr. Robert Young, author of “The pH Miracle,” where he stresses this fact and shows the results some of his clients have had by focusing solely on making their diets more alkaline. He basically emphasizes elimination of meat and dairy which cause acidic build up in the body. I love that he talks about eating greens in the morning. I can get down with greens in the morning, noon, and night. Also, he makes an important mention about our thoughts creating acidity. If you are still on the road of eating highly acidic foods, you will will find yourself more often than not sick, tired, depressed, or highly irritable. Next time your about to go on an emotional rampage, please get down with some greens.  It’s like taking a chill pill. – XoXo Raw Girl

Suki Tranqille on The Art of Raising Healthy Vegan Children

I am lucky to know several fabulous vegan mothers, but Suki Tranqille is a vegan mother who seems to master the art of staying extremely productive as a businesswoman while still being a very active parent.  We met years ago, when  my main focus was fashion—and so was hers. Years later, we’ve reunited and seem to still have similar interests. But now we are both in the business of staying healthy, and empowering others to do the same. Below is a transcript of our interview, in which she revealed some tips on how she keeps her kids vegan and healthy.  Check out her bio and visit her website below! – XoXo Raw Girl

RG: How long have you been a vegan? If you were a meat eater previously what made you decide to change your diet?

ST: I have been a vegan for close to seven years now. I was a meat eater previously and started to progress toward the vegan lifestyle very slowly. It began when I decided that I wanted to do something about the constant fatigue I was feeling.  I did not go to a doctor but if I did, I am sure I would have been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Twelve hours of sleep was not enough and I had to drink double latte just to function. Then I graduated to coffee and caffeine pills which resulted in severe migraine headaches.  I found myself constantly popping pills – caffeine to stay awake, Advil to keep the headaches at bay.  At first, I tried to discover the cause of my fatigue which I had come to realize was abnormal. I did know that I was anemic and noticed a positive result when I took my iron supplements.  However, I was unable to take the supplements all the time because they wreaked havoc on my stomach. To make a long story short, I recognized that I had to change my diet to fix my problem.  It turns out that the ibuprofen was robbing my body of iron and my iron deficiency was a direct cause of my lifestyle.  I do suffer from anemia but it is a B12 anemia – something I was not aware of at the time.  I started off slowly by first eliminating all red meat, then all meat.  I replaced the meat with meat substitutes a lot at first, now I do not eat them as much.

RG: I completely relate as I experienced B12 anemia myself, and still regularly take liquid iron supplements. Was it an easy transition for you if you were giving up meat? What were the health benefits you gained from changing your diet?

ST: Giving up meat was an easy transition because it was a decision that my husband and I made together.  The most difficult part was explaining to other people when we went to their homes why we did not eat the meat.  I would need several pages to describe all the health benefits but I will limit myself to the greatest benefits.  As a result of my vitamin deficiencies, I had begun to lose my hair on both sides of my head. They had reached a point where they were totally bald (and I was only 24 years old!) – that hair has grown back – not as thick as it was when I was younger but I do not have to comb my hair in a way to hide those areas.  I was beginning to grow small moles all over my body and made an appointment with a skin doctor to determine whether those moles were cancerous.  Before the appointment the moles began to get smaller and eventually they went away completely.  I sleep on average 6 to 8 hours a day and do not walk around in a fog nor do I need anything to help me stay awake.  I no longer suffer the occasional heart palpitation and enjoy the preferred rate for both my health insurance and life insurance because of my health.

RG: Wow, those are really concrete benefits. What informed your decision in raising your children vegan?

ST: I began to really look into food and how it affects both our mental and physical capacities.  I also realized through my research that most if not all childhood ailments are due to diet.  Behavior, allergies, and  even school performance are all linked to diet.  My daughter used to suffer from all types of what I call “roving” allergies. One year it was grass, the next year it was fish, the following year it was pollen.  She also suffered as a child from ear infections and eczema. When we changed our diet, all of those issues miraculously disappeared. I used to be afraid to go out without Benedryl.  Both of my children do very well in school and I attribute their success in part to their diet.  I believe that to feed them food that is high fat, hormone filled, genetically modified, killed in inhumane conditions and/or created in a lab rather than nature is to harm them.

RG: Are your children vaccinated?

ST: The children were vaccinated when they were children but it is not something I would do again.  I am against forcing parents to give their daughters the HPV vaccine and I do believe that the schedule of vaccinations is not really designed with children in mind.  If I had to do it again, I would not let my children receive several shots of different vaccines in one day nor would I vaccinate as young as is recommended.  I can’t say I would rule out every vaccine but I would inform myself on every vaccine before agreeing to if and when.

RG: I agree, I think information is key, most people do not realize that harmful substances like mercury are in a lot of vaccines and  can lead to permanent mental and physical damage. NY State unfortunately was trying to pass a bill that would allow kids to be vaccinated without parental consent, which I think is crazy. What are staples in your diet? What are vegan dishes your kids enjoy?

ST: I don’t know that we have staples in our diet; we try to practice as much as we can eating seasonally and regionally. That means that we will make meals out of what is in season. During pumpkin season, I made a lot of pumpkin soup, pumpkin cookies, and pumpkin pie.  We love to eat and experiment with different dishes so for the Superbowl I made a vegetarian chili everyone loved, tonight for dinner we are having African Sweet Potato and Almond Soup. We make many dishes from our native Haiti – just without the meat. I made Haitian beef patties yesterday with soy meat alternative. We eat rice every day, just like I did when I grew up – sometimes it’s black rice, sometimes it’s brown rice, sometimes it’s rice & beans.  We make a lot of Mediterranean dishes as well using eggplant as a meat alternative. The kids love the gyro’s, homemade pizza, black bean & corn salad, sweet plantain and tomato bisque.  We make our own rolled oats cereal and with dried cranberry, almonds and/or raisins for breakfast or we will have tofu eggs.  In the summertime we will add Chilled Cantaloupe Soup to the mix.  We grow a lot of the vegetables ourselves so that adds both the flavor and nutrient content.

RG: Sounds delish. What supplements do you use regularly, if any?

ST: I supplement more during the winter when I buy my vegetables instead of growing them.  We take B-complex regularly, calcium & Vitamin C.  All of the supplements are from whole food sources so that we do not take the chemical version of the Vitamins.  We put flax seed in the cereal for the Omega-3’s and nutritional yeast on the tofu eggs. We also also add broccoli sprouts to most meals. We drink tea at least once a day in order to aid in digestion so that we always have a wide variety of teas in the house.

RG: What crucial advice would you give to mothers who want to raise their children vegan?

ST: It would depend on when you began the process of going vegan.  If you start right from the beginning, it’s not a big deal.  Just be ready to pack lunch for your kids all the time.  I really do mean all the time – every time you visit any relative or friend, anytime you are going to the mall or to the movies, or going on a short trip.  Learn to cook recipes that will store for some time if you are going on a trip and make food for your children that sounds like and looks like what other kids are eating.  Tell your kids why they are eating differently from other people.  When my children were old enough, I let them watch a couple of documentaries about food and its effect on your body.  I also let them watch a film about the treatment of animals in the process of procuring meat.  I don’t worry about them at all when they go out without me – in fact they talk to their friends about what they are eating.

RG: Were you vegan during all of your pregnancies? How did your diet or supplementation change during this time?

ST: I was not a vegan by choice during my pregnancies. I did not eat a lot of meat because I had a difficult time digesting the meat. I hadn’t reached the level of understanding about my food that I have now. However, if  I were to do it again, I would not supplement heavily because as I understand it, the baby becomes accustomed to the high amount of nutrients you ingest – vitamin C for example – and will actually be more susceptible to scurvy because the baby is so accustomed to large amounts of Vitamin C.

RG: I think you answered this sort of…But is it difficult for your kids to interact with the other children who have S.A.D. (Standard American) diets? Is it difficult for them to stick to a vegan diet during school and social functions and if so how do you handle that?

ST: I think it is more difficult for the other children because they ask why my children are vegan and they hear about things they don’t think about.  They hear about the way the animals are treated, they hear about animal fats effect on diabetes, heart disease, cholesterol, etc.  They then go home and ask their parents and the answers are often inadequate.  I think it also helps that I do not have a television in my house – that means that my children do not watch commercials regularly so they are not bombarded with images of eating unhealthy fast food all the time.  They do not ask to go to any fast food restaurant because it is just not a part of their world.  During social functions, I try to anticipate what will be there, I will go to barbecue’s with soy hot dogs, bean burgers (homemade), and soy sausages and I will offer to cook at least a couple of dishes for the holidays to make sure that we all have something to eat.  The meat alternatives at this point are more for the children than myself because it is still a processed food – something I try to limit.  It does, however, provide for a nice transition.

RG: Yes, giving time for transition is important. Any other challenges…?

ST: The biggest challenge is to accept other people’s choices, particularly those of family members, when they eat in a way they know is unhealthy.  At this point, I have gone into great detail about the effects of various foods on the body, e-mailed proven scientific conclusions and yet continue to see the same lifestyle. I have even had a family member hospitalized because of cholesterol, told by a doctor that they would have to change their diet and still buy fried chicken right after emergency surgery! Even though I am the message literally, I talk about the food choices, I grow my food, they can look in my cupboard and see Vitamin C and essential oils instead of pills, there are those who will reject the message even if it means their death.  For me the greatest challenge is accepting that they have a choice, like I do, to determine the quality of their lives and their choice is just as okay as mine.

RG: It’s unfortunate that these unhealthy foods are very addictive, and a lot of people are not willing to step outside the norm even when it means saving their lives. But I do believe that when you are a raw foodie or vegan who is experiencing optimal health, your energy alone can begin to transform people–or at least shock them into the awareness that there is a better way to live. Thank you so much for your time!

Food Inc. Movie Review: I’m Hungry for Change!

Was going to take today off from blogging, but I’m snowed in! So I netflixed the movie: Food Inc. which I recommended last week. It is a MUST SEE for all Americans, and was a very well put together documentary that really gave insight to our food production from seed to consumption in this country.  I used to think that ignorance was bliss, when it came to the foods we eat. Now I just think it’s very dangerous.

I was struck by many emotions while watching the film: disgust, frustration, and surprise from some revelations that were new to me. This world we are living in today, people, truly is toxic. We are pumped daily with negative vibrations from the food we eat to the entertainment and commercial imagery flashed at us every 2.2 seconds. It is incredible as a human race, how far we really have strayed from a sacred garden culture in tune with universal order into a strange and sadistic death consuming culture that thrives on hoarding resources from each other and mother earth and mass producing and cloning animals as if they were robots with no life force. Then what happens to us when we consume these vibrations? What do we become? Think about it.

The majority of us actually believe that our food comes from the grocery store and have no idea how to cultivate plants. If you were left out in the wild, would you know what to eat to survive? Very few people still do. I sure don’t, but my mother could. A couple years ago, when she visited me in my days of inhabiting the concrete jungle in NY, she recognized an edible plant, a derivative of spinach that was growing wildly right outside my brownstone in Crown Heights. She has two large gardens in our home, and just before the winter hit us hard, I was going into my backyard to “make my salad.”

This simple daily act, brought back the realization and frustration with our modern system. FOOD IS SUPPOSED TO BE FREE! Now the entire world has been infected by this Western mental illness that thrives on greed and leads us all to believe not only that we should pay for our food, but that we should pay less for foods that have been engineered and more for life sustaining food that is from nature? A major point emphasized in the film was that our genetically engineered, processed foods are cheap because of the government subsidizing of the corn industry. All of those crazy non-pronounceable names like xanthan gum, malodextrin, sucrose, ascorbic acid etc. that are in cheese, coke, jelly, fast foods, cereals, and on and on—-are all derivatives of corn.

We are living under the illusion of freedom, our seeds are now being controlled by a corporation. What happens if they decide to stop production? That is a lot of power in the hands of people that have clearly demonstrated they have no concern for the well being of any form of life. I just pray that when and if the *&%$ really does hit the fan, there is some safe haven left on this planet for me to retreat to. David Wolfe said half-jokingly  in a video I watched recently that the major problem in this world isn’t our wars, or the economy, or crime, it’s constipation. Most people really are full of *&%$ and it has repercussions for all of us.

I really wish that we could invade Capitol Hill, and force all of the representatives to get a colonic.  Since we can’t, and these food laws that help corporations thrive on exploiting the general population and patent our seeds–the true source of food– are already in effect, it is up to us to take actions that instigate change whether it’s eating raw or at the very least a processed-food-free diet, learning to grow plants, buying local and organic, or finding our own little way of supporting the rights of our farmers, our animals, our planet, and our right to be healthy.

All that said, I am frustrated, but hungry for change.  Are you? For the sake our toxic world, I really hope so. Below I have posted the trailer for Food Inc. once again. WATCH THE MOVIE.       -XoXo Raw Girl

Battle of the Internal Parasites: Knock Them Out Before They Take You Down

Today is Day 1 of another battle with parasites, and I am REALLY not happy about it. To commemorate, I wrote an in depth article on parasites, which you can access via the link below.

“What are parasites?” you mumble. They are annoying, disgusting, creepy worm like organisms, some visible to the human eye and some not, that can set up shop in the human body and pimp you out like a common prostitute. That would make, according to statistics, the majority of people in the world hookers. That’s right, you may think that your constant cravings for dessert and bread is completely normal, but you might be marching to the drum of the parasites inside you that thrive on sweets and carbs. Not to mention the fact that they prevent your body from absorbing nutrients from the foods you eat.  “Oh that’s crazy,” your thinking. “There’s no way there’s any kind of worms inside of me.” If you had that thought it may just be the parasites talking!

A few years ago, I was introduced to the idea of parasites from a fellow yogi. He had just completed a parasite cleanse and said that it changed his life. I was telling him I was going raw, but having a problem with craving sweets and cutting out bread.  He told me to do a parasite cleanse, but I forgot all about it until the veggie really hit the fan. I started breaking out, acne, rashes, felt tired all the time, and had the chills. Ran into another vegan friend who told me she battled with parasites for a year, and used to have the same exact symptoms I had. I know now that it was a combination of nutritional deficiency (mostly B12) and parasites.

My first battle with them began, and I got real gangsta. I consumed only things they didn’t like. Tons of greens, garlic, cayenne, apple cider vinegar, anything that I heard would kill them. Long story short without any stomach churning details, they exist. You won’t believe it, until you see what may come out of you. Anyway, this first bout, I arose, three months later, the victor. I was strutting like Ali leaving the ring.  Got my groove back, my energy, and clear skin.

So how did this relapse happen again? Well there are a variety of ways to contract parasites including: drinking contaminated water, sexual contact (including kissing), hygiene, pets etc.  On my end, I haven’t been as gangsta about protecting myself on the dating front as I could be, and although I am crazy about clean water, I remember an incident recently where the source was questionable. It could have been either or none of these things. But I will say this, the next time I go out and have a fabulous time, and the night is winding down and mood is just right, when Mr. Right leans in for a kiss, I will have to stop him like a true diva and ask “Have you done a parasite cleanse?” If he shakes his head no, I will have to whisper, “Well, then call me in two weeks,” and catwalk away.  I wish I was kidding, but at least I know my health is worth the wait.

New Article: “The Wonders of Spirulina”

About two years ago, I was introduced to spirulina, when  offered a green shake at a vegan spot in Brooklyn. I thought it was good but I knew nothing about this strange-sounding food,  so I never really started regularly incorporating it into my diet until a couple of months ago.  For now, I generally add it in powder form to my morning post-workout smoothies, and my delectable raw “Green Yogurt” dessert (a recipe I will share), and find that it gives me an incredible amount of energy that lasts throughout the day.

As I did some research for this article, I was excited to learn more in-depth about the incredible amount of nutrients this algae provides. In this age of biggest losers, obsessive dieting, and fad health frenzies, heavens knows we need to teach people to start incorporating more nutrients in their diets. I was upset last night when I heard trainer and life coach Jillian Michaels (with the fabulous abs) connected with Biggest Loser inadequately respond to a question about overweight people feeling too hungry to cut their portion sizes. People are frenzied over the incredible portion sizes they eat, but what they forget is that when they ate that giant fast food meal or whatever, they just fed the body a lot of empty food devoid of nutrients, and that’s why they are still hungry!

Of course, there is an emotional component as well that cannot be overlooked, but those who are sexy raw foodies or have tried raw food, know that they feel surprisingly full after meals, mostly because they body is actually being fed food with nutrients and just empty calories. Spirulina is one of the wonder foods that can introduce a great deal of necessary nutrients in your diet and boost your immune system.

New Article: B12 an Essential Supplement for Vegans

“Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.” ~ Redd Foxx

True, we are all gonna die, but I am playing my cards so I still have the upper hand when I’m older.  I’d rather get taken out by a bus than cancer. Or any disease that degenerates  my mental faculties for that matter.  My hope is that at least I will be able to play a round without having someone wheel me over to the table, or have to ask  someone else hold my hand for me in the game of life.

The thing is, even if you are already a sexy vegan, and eat a wide range of fresh organic produce,  if you don’t take your B-12, you may find youself lacking in energy, depressed (which is definitely not sexy), and loosing mental faculties way before your time.  I had my own personal experience with B12 deficiency after being a vegan for almost ten years and then transitioning into a diet consisting of mostly raw foods. To say the least, it was not fun.  I started to notice I felt tired a lot, my feet and hands were tingling,  and my memory was horrible.  Let’s not get into the fact that I was pretty sure I was actually loosing my mind! It was a scary experience, but luckily the core issue was remedied  in time.

Supplementation of this vitamin is not optional if you are a vegan, it is an absolute necessity. Apparently even though B12 is found in animal products, many meat eaters are deficient as well. David Wolfe, one of the leading authorites on raw food,  claims that Spirulina, which is a type of blue green algae, is the best food source of B12. More on Spirulina later…

Cleansing in the New Year…

Last year, I began the ritual of juice fasting into the new year.  The aim of the fast was to give my body a rest, clean out my system, affirm release of old habits or blocks of the past year, and renew a spiritual and physical connection. Last year the fast was 10 days. This year, I made it to day 7 and then on day 8 had a strange burning desire for vegetable broth that I couldn’t shake, so I used the last three days to come down off the fast. If your looking for a way to jump start the year, amplify new positive resolutions, or renew yourself spiritually, physically, or mentally, you may want to give fasting a try. Just make sure to consult your doc if you have a special condition and to give your body adequate time to come down off the fast.

If you aren’t a fan of fasting cold turkey on vegetable juice, or would like to ease into it, here are some modifications that may allow you do some form of cleansing in this New Year:

  • Try  starting and ending the day with vegetable juice or master cleanse, and eating a meal mid-day.
  • Eliminate meat for a specified period (3 days to a week)  If you are transitioning into the vegan world, and still eating all kinds of meat, you can use your fast to eliminate red meat and still eat fish.
  • Go raw for a couple days: meaning you consume only fruits and vegetables and/or juices for a specified period of time.
  • Try to go for 3 days to a week not eating any packaged, heavily processed, unnatural foods. Read the labels on everything you consume and try to understand what the ingredients actually are in the food you are eating.  It’s harder than you think… as they say, ignorance is bliss!
  • Substitute morning meals for fruit smoothies with flaxseed or pysilium husk.

For a refresher on the benefits of fasting feel free to revisit this article: Juice Fasting: The Ultimate Tool for Anti-Aging & Spiritual Awakening

** Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. Listen to your body, consult w/ yr doc if need be, and take my advice at your own risk. Side effects may include general joie de vire, a spiritual awakening, or an increase in magnetism & overall sexiness.

Best Fresh Juice Spots in NYC

At this point, I pretty much have every raw vegan spot in every borough in the city committed to memory. Here’s a list of  locations where I found the best organic fresh juice in NYC:

1.  LifeThyme Natural Market (410 6th Avenue @ W.9th Street) Why # 1? Only one name necessary: MELVIN. I am a firm believer  that the energy with which food is prepared greatly affects how well food is assimilated. Melvin, is an incredible dreadlocked man with great energy who has the art of juicing down to a science. I also appreciate that the brother knows how to handle a coconut, which is rare in Manhattan (elsewhere you might end up with pieces of coconut shell in your smoothie). He  is usually found whipping up juice and smoothies for long lines of customers who know him well  in the am hours until early afternoon.  My favorites there: Sweet Christine, Coconut Smoothie with pineapple and banana, & of course a Juice with all greens.

2. Gobo Restaurant (401 6th Avenue @ W. 8th Street) I stumbled upon the juice at Gobo one day, when Melvin wasn’t around at LifeThyme–it is literally almost across the street. They have very fresh wheat grass juice, and other blends, and every time I have gotten excellent service.

3. Westerly Natural Market (913 8th Avenue @ 54th Street) Although they sometimes take their sweet time making your juice or can’t find a coconut, I still love Westerly. They have a nice range of juices and smoothies, and great vegan snacks to grab on the go!

4. Integral Yoga Natural Foods (229 13th Street between 7th & 8th Ave.) Integral Yoga has been hit or miss in the past. I never really feel great energy there from the people making the juice, but I still stop by if I am in a bind and in the area because they have a range of fresh organic produce and its the cheapest place to get a large celery and apple juice which is the bomb when detoxing!

My New Health Article on “Quinoa”

Below is a link to my new article about the health benefits of quinoa,  which includes a description of how to prepare it.  http://nutrition.suite101.com/article.cfm/quinoa

Quick Tips for Interesting Quinoa recipes: (it can be cooked or sprouted by soaking)

  • Prepare quinoa and mix in parsley, diced tomatoes, diced mint, garlic, and lemon juice for a tabouleh like dish
  • Use quinoa as a filler for wraps
  • Add quinoa to soup
  • Try quinoa as a substitution for rice in sushi. Wrap in nori rolls (seaweed) with diced and sautéed vegetables.
  • Season with curry, thyme,  & sea salt and mix in with any salad
